Timbers' deal nets ex-Sounders, Akron U. midfielder

The Aug. 6, 2014 MLS All-Star Game at Jeld-Wen Field will be a game between MLS players and Bayern Munich.

The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. PT, with coverage by ESPN2.

It will be the 11th time in the game's 19-year history that the MLS' best will take on an international club.

Bayern is the third team from Europe to be involved; Chelsea played in 2006 and 2012, and Manchester United played in 2011 and 2012.

The MLS side is 5-3-1 against international competition in the game, having lost 3-1 to AS Roma this year in Kansas City.

Bayern won the UEFA Champions League this year, beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the final for its first title in 12 years. Bayern also won the Bundesliga league title and German Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

The club will take part in the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco on Dec. 17.

• The Timbers traded defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste and acquired former Seattle midfielder Steve Zakuani in MLS re-entry draft dealings on Thursday.

Portland got the No .2 pick from Chivas USA by sending that club Jean-Baptiste and the No. 17 pick. Also going to the Timbers was midfielder/defender Jorge Villafana.

Zakuani, 25, has played five years for the Sounders since he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. The 6-0, 180-pounder from the Democratic Republic of the Congo ,whose hometown became London at age 4, also played at the University of Akron, where Timbers coach Caleb Porter was coach before coming to the Timbers.

• The Timbers also announced that midfielder Rodney Wallace has had surgery in Tigard to repair a torn right AC and non-displaced right tibial plateau fracture and right meniscus. He is expected to be out for five to seven months.
