The Bruins put up 20 points in fourth quarter to earn 55-50 road win

Wilson High battled back to take the lead twice in the fourth quarter only to get Hutzlered by Barlow in the final minutes of Friday’s 55-50 girls basketball loss.

The Trojans came from as many as nine points down in the first half. They took a 36-35 lead early in the fourth quarter, after Vernonica Rivers went the length of the court for a layup and teammate Nikki Hogan followed with a short turnaround in the lane.

The teams traded the lead three more times before Barlow went ahead for good on a scoring spurt by junior Haylee Hutzler.

She scored on a pair of layups followed by an open 3 from the right side. The seven quick points put the Bruins up 46-39 with 3:32 to play.

"I was looking for open shots and having confidence that they would fall," Hutzler said.

Wilson made a charge in the final minute, closing to within two points, as Lily Brodrick sank a pair of free throws and Alexa Hinkley swished a 3 with 0:25 on the clock.

The Trojans had a glimpse of hope when a pair of Barlow foul shots bounced off the rim. But Barlow’s Emily Sunderland crashed between a pair of Trojans to grab the offensive rebound, and the Bruins called time out before being tied up under the basket.

"I just timed it right," Sunderland said. "It was tough with chaos all around and the fans getting loud, but our focus in practice has been to stay mentally strong."

Barlow put the game out of reach seconds later, when Caitlyn Pemberton sank two free throws.

Sunderland came off the bench to lead the Bruins with 13 points, while Ellen Berkley paced Wilson with 11.

The Trojans erased a 28-19 halftime deficit by holding Barlow to just one field goal in the third quarter.
