Beavers getting transfer QB Zach Kline

Zach Kline, the backup quarterback at California this season, has told Oregon State coaches he plans to transfer to OSU.

The 6-2, 200-pound Kline, who played behind starter Jared Goff as a redshirt freshman this fall, will attend a junior college during winter and spring terms. Kline will transfer to OSU for either summer or fall term, sit out next season and be eligible as a junior in the 2015 season.

The Danville, Calif., native, who was recruited by Oregon State out of high school, played in six games for the Bears, completing 43 of 82 passes (52.4 percent) for 443 yards and three touchdowns with four interceptions.

"I just think from what the coaches have told me, I have a better opportunity somewhere else," Kline told the Bay Area News Group two weeks ago. "They put it to me straight and in a professional way, which I appreciate.

"I wish I could stay at Cal … (but) it's clear Jared is the guy. They told me, 'If you want to start, you should go somewhere else.' I need to find a place where that's going to be the case."

  • WRITER'S NOTE: I erred when I wrote Monday that Zach Kline, the backup quarterback at California this season who has told Oregon State coaches he plans to transfer to OSU, will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

The 6-2, 200-pound Kline, who played behind starter Jared Goff as a redshirt freshman this fall, will have two seasons to play after sitting out the 2014 season.

What threw me off was Kline's intention to attend junior college for winter and spring terms to get his associate degree. Kline is doing that, so he will be eligible to be on financial aid immediately at Oregon State.

A transfer coming from a four-year school must wait a year before getting financial assistance at the new school.
