Blue Jackets ink Bjorkstrand

At Mamlo, Sweden, Nic Petan of the Portland Winterhawks scored for Canada as it opened the world junior championships Thursday afternoon with a 7-2 victory over Germany.

Five Canadian players scored, with Anthony Mantha getting a hat trick, all of his goals assisted by Jonathan Drouin.

Canada improved to 12-0 all-time against Germany at the under-20 event.

Germany scored 1:33 into the game to lead 1-0.

Petan got the final goal, at 10:13 of the third period.

Defenseman Derrick Pouliot and forward Taylor Leier, both from the Winterhawks, also played for Canada.

The announced crowd was 1,831 at the 5,800-seat Isstadion.

Canada's next group stage game is Saturday against the Czech Republic.

  • Another Winterhawks forward, Oliver Bjorkstrand, has signed an entry-level contract with the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets.

    Columbus drafted Bjorkstrand in 2013 with the 89th pick.
