PREP WATCH: Rainier Beach, Bishop Gorman in Schwab title game

Kadeem Strickland's 28 points carry Jefferson to win over Churchill in 5A rematch


The two highest-ranked out-of-state teams will play Monday for the Les Schwab Invitational title.

No. 9 Rainier Beach of Seattle and No. 23 Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, Nev., will meet at 8:30 p.m. in the 32nd and final game of the annual tourney at Liberty High.

Bishop Gorman turned aside defending Class 6A champion West Linn 57-49 in Sunday's semifinals, and then Rainier Beach beat No. 34 Whitney Young of Chicago 89-82.

 Also Monday: Jefferson will play Tigard at 5:30 p.m. for fifth place, and Jesuit will collide with Churchill at 1:30 p.m. West Linn and Whitney Young will battle at 7 p.m. for third place.

To start the final day of the four-day event, South Eugene and Beaverton will play at 9 a.m., Beaverton will meet Sunset at 10:30 a.m., Grant will face Timberline at noon, and Central Catholic will take on Clackamas at 4 p.m. for the consolation bracket title.

 In other Sunday games, Tigard beat Jesuit 67-56, and Jefferson turned back Churchill 67-55 in a rematch of last season's Class 5A title game.

Demos point guard Kadeem Strickland pushed Jeff to victory with a 28-point outburst. He made 5 of 7 attempts from 3-point range and went 9 of 12 from the field.

Silas Melson added 16 points for the Democrats (6-1).

 In morning consolation games Sunday, Central Catholic beat Timberline 55-51, Clackamas edged Grant 79-75 in overtime, Beaverton won 72-59 over South Eugene, and Sunset knocked off Lake Oswego 43-39.

Central Catholic (4-5) got 20 points and eight rebounds from forward Patrick Myers and 15 points out of reserve Cole Stringer.

Clackamas outscored Grant 19-15 in OT and improved to 7-2, while the Generals fell to 6-2. For Grant, guard Darren Kennedy had 20 points and forward Deiondre Bird had 18 points and seven rebounds.
