COLLEGE HOOPS: Santa Clara stops UP men

Saint Mary's women down Pilots, go to 12-1


• The Portland Pilots fell to 0-2 in West Coast Conference play on Monday, losing 76-68 at home to Santa Clara.

The Broncos (8-7 overall, 1-1 WCC) made 12 of 23 3-pointers to overcome a combined 42 points by UP center Thomas van Der Mars (game-high 23) and guard Kevin Bailey (19).

Portland (8-6 overall) also got a double-double from forward Ryan Nicholas, who had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Pilots led most of the early going, but a 13-2 Santa Clara run gave the Broncos the lead. UP, after pulling within three points early in the second half, went scoreless for 6:17 and fell behind by 15 points.

Portland's five-game homestand to start the conference season continues Thursday against the University of the Pacific, with tip-off at 7 p.m.

• Warner Pacific won 87-82 in overtime Monday at home against non-league Vancouver Island University.

The Knights improved to 7-8 overall, with Ryan Parks their leading scorer (18 points), Doug Thomas getting 17 points and Sean Gaines going for 14 points and 12 rebounds.

• Concordia claimed an 86-83 non-league victory at Willamette on Monday.

Willy Ligon scored 25 points for the Cavaliers (10-4). Tyler Velasquez had 17 points, Kory Kirwan scored 15 and Esvan Middleton had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Willamette fell to 2-7.

The Cavs won the second half 47-38.


     Saint Mary's, coming off an upset win against No. 21 Gonzaga, continued to look like the West Coast Conference favorite on Monday night, beating the visiting Portland Pilots 80-65.

    Cassandra Brown scored 25 points for UP (1-1 in league, 8-5 overall).

    Kari Luttinen added 15 points for the Pilots, who matched the Gaels (2-0 WCC, 12-1 overall) from the floor but were outrebounded 38-24.
