SCORESHEET: Canada loses out on medal

Canada lost 2-1 to Russia in Sunday's bronze-medal game at the world junior hockey championships at Malmo, Sweden.

Russia scored twice in the first period. Canada got on the board midway through the third period.

On Saturday, Finland dashed Canada's hopes of winning the gold medal, beating the Canadians 5-1 in the semifinals.

Not much went well in the semis for Canada and its three players from the Portland Winterhawks.

One of them, center Nic Petan drew an abuse-of-official misconduct penalty for saying something to a referee after Finland goalie Juuse Saros stopped a shot by Petan.

"Terrible call," Petan said. "I didn't say anything out of line. That's just the way it goes here, I guess. We need to move past it."

Defenseman Derrick Pouliot, also from the Hawks, brought down Henrik Haapala on a breakaway for a Finland penalty shot.

On the slightly bright side, D-man Mathew Dumba, who could join the Winterhawks after the tournament, was deemed eligible to play after overcoming an injury.
