1966: Big win for Buckaroos, Hay, Jones, Kelly
Jan. 9, 1966
A crowd of 9,903 at Memorial Coliseum sees Red Eye Hay score the winning goal, Art Jones add a hat trick and goalie Dave Kelly pitch a shutout as the Portland Buckaroos beat the Victoria Maple Leafs 4-0.
Victoria remains atop the Western Hockey League standings, with Portland second, two points behind and with one fewer game played.
Meanwhile, plans are finalized for this weekend's annual Active and Old Timers baseball association gathering. Larry Jansen, pitcher-coach with the San Francisco Giants, will speak, and new Portland Beavers general manager Jerry Krause (who would go on to fame with the NBA Chicago Bulls) will attend.
