Shootout goes to Victoria

HIGHLIGHTS

In a shootout, the Victoria Royals topped the Hawks by a 3-2 count for the third time in three meetings this season.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Winterhawks did gain a point, leaving them with a three-point lead over Spokane and Everett and a four-point edge on Seattle in the Western Hockey League U.S. Division.

TOP PERFORMERS

• Nic Petan, in his second game since returning from the world juniors in Sweden, scored Portland's first goal and added an assist.

Petan's goal came on a power play at 8:48 of the first period and gave Portland a 1-0 lead.

• Corbin Boes, acquired Friday in a trade with Lethbridge, made his Winterhawk debut in goal and stopped 31 shots.

NOTES

• In order, Brendan Leipsic, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Petan missed in the shootout, while Jack Walker scored on Victoria's second attempt.

• Leipsic put Portland in front 2-1 on a power play at 16:51 of the second period.

• Petan has 21 goals and Leipsic 22 this season.

• Defenseman Derrick Pouliot, also back from the world juniors, earned two assists.

• Victoria's tying goals came at 14:50 of the first period and 6:42 of the third period, the latter on a power play.

• The Hawks played without defenseman Mathew Dumba, their new acquisition from the NHL Minnesota Wild. He is recovering at home in Calgary from a virus, Portland coach/general manager Mike Johnston says.

KEY STATS

• Portland led 40-34 in shots, and Victoria goaltender Coleman Vollrath was named No. 1 star of the game.

Vollrath (11-4-0-1) has won all three games in the Portland series. He leads the WHL in goals-against average (1.98).
