COLLEGE HOOPS: OSU's Hamblin, Hanson shoot down Ducks

Beavers claim seventh straight series win

by: COURTESY OF DAVE NISHITANI - Gabrielle Hanson, a 5-11 freshman guard, gets a lift from teammates as Oregon State wins at home against Oregon on Monday night.Oregon State answered Oregon's second-half run with statement stretch play Monday night.

The Beavers beat the Ducks 84-70 at Gill Coliseum to complete a season series sweep. Oregon State has won the last seven meetings of the Civil War rivals.

OSU won Monday with a barrage of 3-pointers, especially early, and the immovable inside presence of 6-6 sophomore Ruth Hamblin.

The Canadian center blocked a school-record 10 shots against the shot-happy Ducks, while adding 23 points, mostly on layups after feeds from teammates, and 12 rebounds.

It was the third triple-double in history by an OSU player. Others came from former Jackson High star Lisa Channel and Judy Spoelstra. Channel had 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in an 84-62 win over Cal at Corvalis on Feb. 11, 1984. Spoelstra, also a former coach, had 10 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists versus Illinois State on Jan. 7, 1983, as OSU won 89-57.

Hamblin's triple-double, the 14th in women's college basketball this season and first by a Pac-12 player in 2013-14, came after long-range early baskets by OSU guards Jamie Weisner and Sydney Wiese helped to spread the Oregon defense.

And, in the second half, freshman Gabriella Hanson turned it on for the Beavers, especially after Oregon had pulled to within one point, at 62-61 with 8:55 remaining. Hanson's scoring fueled a 14-2 run, and she wound up with a career-high 19 points.

Hanson was 8 of 9 from the field; Hamblin 11 of 15. Hanson made all three of her 3-point tries.

Weisner finished with 17 points and seventh rebound, and Deven Hunter added 11 points and eight boards.

Hamblin had tied the school record with nine blocks against No. 2 Notre Dame in an OSU home loss on Dec. 29.

Oregon State shot 50.7 percent from the field and made 8 of 28 from 3-point range, while the Ducks were 31.8 percent on field goals and 4 of 22 from beyond the arc.

OSU improved to 2-2 in the Pac-12, while Oregon fell to 0-4. Overall, the Beavers are 10-6, the Ducks 9-6.

Oregon got 18 points and 19 rebounds from 6-3 forward Jillian Alleyne, who got her 13th double-double of the season despite foul trouble. But the Ducks missed starting senior Danielle Love, who suffered a concussion in Saturday's 88-80 homecourt loss to the Beavers.

Chrishae Rowe scored 15 points for UO and had nine rebounds. Ariel Thomas and Katelyn Lopez each had 11 points, and Lexi Peterson contributed 10 points.

The Beavers' next games are Friday at USC and Monday at UCLA.

The Ducks will play at UCLA on Friday and at USC on Sunday.
