Jan. 18, 1994: Terry Porter's 5,000th assist comes in strange game

Trail Blazers guard Terry Porter dishes out his 5,000th NBA career assist in an unusual game at Memorial Coliseum.

The milestone comes in the final two minutes of a sloppy, 104-103 overtime victory over Denver — a victory possible largely because Portland makes every one of its foul shots for the first time under coach Rick Adelman.PORTER

The team goes 20 for 20 on free throws (somebody cue Bill Schonely).

Porter has six turnovers in the first half, but none in the second half.

In the extra period, Porter finds Buck Williams for a layup to get assist No. 5,000 and tie the game at 100-100. It was the Blazers' only basket, on eight field-goal attempts, in the OT.

Rod Strickland later sinks, naturally, two free throws with 29 seconds left in OT to secure the win.

"Strange game," says Blazers forward Clifford Robinson, after scoring a season-high 32 points.
