SCORESHEET: Rupp sets U.S. indoor 5,000 record
Golub honored; Timbers make first three picks
Portland's Galen Rupp slashed nearly six seconds off the American indoor 5,000-meter record in a race Thursday night at Boston University.
Rupp finished in 13:01.26, regaining a record he had in 2011 and that most recently belonged to Lopez Lomong of Lake Oswego (13:07.00).
Rupp and fellow Nike Oregon Project runner Sam Chelanga battled throughout Thursday's race, with Chelanga taking second in 13:04.35.
Cam Levin of the Nike Oregon Project, headed by Alberto Salazar, placed third in 13:19.16, a Canadian indoor record.
Rupp also plans to take a shot at the U.S. indoor mile and 2-mile records in races on Boston University's track as well.
Mike Golub of the Portland Timbers has been named MLS executive of the year for 2013.
Golub is the soccer club's chief operating officer.
He also won the award in 2011.
The Timbers took a forward, midfielder and defender with three picks in the first two rounds of the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday.
At No. 17 overall, Portland chose forward Schillo Tshuma from the University of Maryland. The Zimbabwe native helped the Terps reach the NCAA final against Notre Dame in 2013.
Portland picked defender Taylor Peay from the Washington Huskies with the No. 26 overall pick, in the second round.
The Timbers took midfielder Aaron Long from Cal Riverside with the No. 36 pick.
