JAN. 20, 1973: Geoff Petrie breaks his Blazers record with 51 points at Houston

Guard Geoff Petrie scores a team-record 51 points for the Trailblazers (spelled as one word at the time) as they win their NBA road game 130-115 at Houston.PETRIE

Forward Sidney Wicks adds 38 points, tying his career high.

All this before the era of the 3-point line, of course.

Petrie nets 29 points in the first half, making an assortment of 25-footers, layups and drives.

Rudy Tomjanovich leads a brief Rockets rally in the second half, but Portland never trails.

Petrie had the previous club record -- 46 points.

He gets his 51 in 42 minutes, making 19 of 35 shots from the field and 13 of 14 free throws, while managing a team-high seven assists and two rebounds.

"The shooting twins put on quite an exhibition," says Portland coach Jack McCloskey.

The Blazers improve to 12-38.
