MEN'S COLLEGE HOOPS: Pilots top LMU; Vikings lose on late putback

THURSDAY SUMMARY

• A big second half propelled the Portland Pilots to a 71-64 victory over Loyola Marymount at Chiles Center.

• Portland State added to its long list of close games and last-second decisions, but the Vikings came up short this time at Stott Center against Northern Arizona, falling 65-63 on a putback layup by NAU's Kris Yanku with 0.4 left.

  • Pilots overcome Lions

    Ryan Nicholas (16 points, 9 rebounds), Thomas van der Mars (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Bryce Pressley (14 points) led the University of Portland past visiting Loyola Marymount 71-64 in a West Coast Conference game.SHARP

    The Pilots played without leading scorer Kevin Bailey (16.5 points per game), who sat out with a calf injury. Junior guard Bobby Sharp started for Bailey. Sharp finished with 11 points.

    Pressley, who leads the WCC in 3-point percentage, made 4 of 7 from beyond the arc.

    Freshman point guard Alec Wintering had 10 assists and one turnover for UP.

    Portland shot 49.1 percent to the Lions' 37.5 percent from the field.

    The Pilots improved to 6-7 in the conference and 14-11 overall going into a 1 p.m. Saturday Chiles Center meeting with Pepperdine (7-7, 14-12).

    LMU fell to 3-11, 11-15.

  • Vikings slip in Big Sky

    Portland State slipped to 6-7 in the Big Sky with its 65-63 homecourt loss to Northern Arizona.

    PSU is tied for seventh place in the conference going into a 7 p.m. Saturday home game against Sacramento State.

    The Vikings' loss Thursday was their first at home in the past six outings.

    PSU (11-11) was tied with NAU at 63-63 when freshman guard Kris Yanku was called for a charging foul with 37 seconds remaining. Vikings guard Tim Douglas had a pass deflected on a drive, and the Lumberjacks took possession and got the winning basket on Yanku's offensive rebound shot with two seconds to go.

    NAU improved to 11-13 overall.

    DaShaun Wiggins had 19 points to lead the Viks, but sprained an ankle with about three minutes remaining.

    Douglas scored 16 points, and Kyle Richardson added 13 points and nine rebounds for PSU.

    NAU outshot the Viks from the field, 49.1 percent to 42.6 percent.

    The Lumberjacks and Northern Colorado are tied for second in the Big Sky at 8-5, three games behind Weber State (11-2).

    Montana, Montana State and North Dakota are 706.

    PSU shares the seventh spot — seven teams make the conference playoffs — with Eastern Washington and Sacramento State, who both also are 6-7.

    Idaho State is 5-7, and Southern Utah is 0-13.
