Feb. 16, 2000: Arvydas Sabonis phones home
Trail Blazers center Arvydas Sabonis calls home to his parents, Andreus and Milda, on Independence Day in Lithuania and then lifts his NBA team to a 99-95 victory at home over Golden State with 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
It is the 35-year-old's third consecutive game with 20 points or more.
Warriors coach Garry St. Jean says everything with the Blazers revolves around Sabonis catching the ball in the post, as it did with Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics, or Magic Johnson or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Blazers beat the Warriors in spite of 26 turnovers and shoddy play, other than by Sabonis.
"Without 'Sabas,' we had no chance," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy says.
