A high-scoring forward with the Portland Winterhawks, Bjorkstrand was born in Herning, Denmark.


The Portland Storm, getting set for their first season in the new World Football League, are signing players almost daily for coach Dick Coury. Storm owner Bruce Gelker insists he wants Civic Stadium set up with additional bleachers that would boost capacity to 33,000.

The Trail Blazers are checking out center Bill Walton before they sign him — and a team physician will be looking especially at the UCLA center's knees and his back, since he has been undergoing acupuncture for pain and is said to still be recovering from cracked vertebrae.

UO sophomore Peter Jacobsen wins the Western Intercollegiate Golf Championships by four shots at Santa Cruz, Calif.

Former Madison High pitcher Rick Wise, traded to the Boston Red Sox during the offeseason, wins in his American League debut. The veteran right-hander tosses a six-hit complete game and beats Detroit 8-1.

Joni Huntley, a senior at Sheridan High, sets an Estacada Invitational meet record with her high jump of 5-10 3/4.

In Eugene, Oregon Ducks freshman Mary Officer from Madison High sets school records in the 200-meter hurdles (29.8) and long jump (19-1) and gets a third win at a multiteam meet as she finishes the 100 hurdles in 14.6. She also takes second in the 220-yard dash (26.6).
