The Portland State women’s golf team is preparing for the Big Sky Championships, Sunday through Tuesday at Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz.

“We need to focus on a few course management details and eliminate some of the big numbers,” coach Kailin Downs says.

A Ram Choi, a junior, and Madisen Bentley, a freshman, are key players for the Vikings, “and they have the ability to shave strokes and take it low,” Downs says.

Choi was Big Sky player of the year in 2013, when PSU placed second, four shots behind Northern Arizona at Ocotillo.

The Vikings have won six conference titles in the past 11 years, with 2011 their most recent championship season.

The Viks were able to get a look at Ocotillo on Saturday, as they prepared to play in the Cowgirl Classic, a two-day event hosted by Wyoming at Maricopa, Ariz., that ended on Tuesday.

“Ocotillo sets up well for this group,” Downs says, “and they are hungry for a conference championship.”

The Vikings were third among eight Big Sky teams in the Cowgirl Classic, finishing the three rounds 12 shots behind Montana and nine shots in back of Sacramento State.
