Timber notes

With the Portland Timbers yet to win a match this season, emotions are starting to boil over.

Owner Merritt Paulson was involved in a fiery, Mark Cuban-esque verbal exchange with fans after Portland’s 1-1 draw against Chivas USA last Saturday. Then, only two players — goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and defender Michael Harrington — stayed in the locker room to address the media.Coach Caleb Porter says Portland (0-2-4, 4 points) can put together a few wins and climb in the MLS Western Conference, though.

“There are plenty of examples of teams that started slow that have won it all,” Porter says. “I believe Houston started eight games without a win and ended up winning the MLS Cup, and the LA Galaxy started slow when they won it one year as well. But ... we have to step it up. There is nothing we can do other than get back to work and keep fighting and keep pushing and improve in the areas we need to.

“We have 28 games left, so there are plenty of points, but it is a shame to give away a 1-0 lead (against Chivas).”

Ricketts vowed that “we are going to do well. We are going to be there in the end.”

• One of the few positive things the Timbers can take from the Chivas match is that they seem to be figuring out how to defend against set pieces. Chivas earned a whopping 10 corner kicks, but the Portland defense did not concede a goal off of them.

“We made some tweaks this week,” Porter says, of his club’s set-piece defense. “It was much better.”
