Winterhawks: Hockey season? Yes, at least the start of preseason for Portland’s Western Hockey League Western Conference champions. This is day two of the Hawks’ camp, with more than 80 players reporting. Also today, the first two of eight games to be played over four days in the team’s annual intrasquad Neely Cup tournament. The puck drops at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., at the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton.

Baseball: The Hillsboro Hops play host to the Spokane Indians at Ron Tonkin Field, 7 p.m. ... Also in the Class A Northwest League, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are at home against the Tri-City Dust Devils, 6:30 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 22

WinCo Foods Portland Open: It’s round two of the 72-hole Web.com Tour regular-season finale at Pumpkin Ridge.

Hood to Coast Relay: The 33rd annual team run from Mount Hood to Seaside begins at 6:30 a.m. at Timberline Lodge. The event has 1,050 teams of up to 12 runners each and covers a 199-mile course.

Baseball: Spokane plays at the Hillsboro Hops, 7 p.m. ... Tri-City is at the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, 6:30 p.m.

College women’s soccer: Portland State plays Utah Valley at Hillsboro Stadium, 6 p.m., on the first day of the PSU Tournament. The opening game pits Drake and Boise State at 3 p.m.

Winterhawks: On day two of the intrasquad Neely Cup, Portland campers have games at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the team’s skating facility in Beaverton.

Seahawks: Seattle’s third of four NFL exhibition games is 7 p.m. PT at CenturyLink Field against the Chicago Bears (NFL).

Saturday, Aug. 23

WinCo Foods Portland Open: The Web.com Tour event swings into its third round at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

Thorns: Portland meets FC Kansas City in the National Women’s Soccer League semifinals. The match takes place at Verizon Wireless Field in Kansas City, Mo., at 10 a.m. PT (ESPN2).

Hood to Coast Relay: The 33rd annual race from Mount Hood finishes just north of the Broadway Avenue turnaround in Seaside for 1,050 teams of up to 12 runners apiece.

Winterhawks: The annual Neely Cup continues with intrasquad games at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., at the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton.

Baseball: Hillsboro is at home against Spokane in the NWL, 4 p.m. ... Tri-City plays Salem-Keizer at Volcanoes Stadium, 6:30 p.m.

College volleyball: PSU’s alumni match is at Stott Center, 5 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 24

Timbers: Portland and the Seattle Sounders collide at Providence Park, 2 p.m. (ESPN2).

WinCo Foods Portland Open: The final round of the Web.com Tour event is today at Pumpkin Ridge.

Winterhawks: The Neely Cup tournament concludes at the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton with the third-place game at 8:30 a.m. and the championship game at 10:30 a.m.

Baseball: The Hillsboro Hops and Spokane Indians wrap up a five-game series at Ron Tonkin Field, 1:30 p.m. ... Salem-Keizer concludes its home series against Tri-City with a 5 p.m. game.

College women’s soccer: Portland State is back on its home turf, Hillsboro Stadium, for a nonleague tournament match against Boise State, 1 p.m. Also playing today: Utah Valley vs. Drake, 10 a.m.

Monday, Aug. 25

Baseball: Class A Hillsboro opens a five-game road series versus Tri-City, 7:15 p.m. ... The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are at the Spokane Indians for the start of a five-game series. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.

Aug. 21, 1975: Akili Smith (age 39). A first-round pick (No. 3 overall) in the 1999 NFL draft (Cincinnati Bengals), Smith was born on this day in San Diego and played quarterback for the University of Oregon.

Aug. 24, 1981: Seth Kelsey (age 33). The three-time Olympic epee fencer with Portland ties was born on this day in Santa Monica, Calif.

Aug. 24, 1988: Jeremiah Masoli (age 26). A former Oregon Ducks quarterback, he plays for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

Christie Kerr wins the LPGA Safeway Classic at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. She birdies the 17th and 18th holes in the final round to match Swedes Helen Alfredsson and Sophie Gustafson at 13-under-par 203, then birdies the 18th in a playoff, clinching her 11th career victory with a downhill, 20-foot putt. The tournament draws a record crowd of 72,500, despite plans to move to Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in 2009.
