Dorsey's 3 and late defense enable Oregon to rally for 75-72 NCAA Tournament win over Rhode Island

The Oregon Ducks have had plenty of thrillers and last-minute or last-second heroics this season.

Their effort on Sunday night ranks up there with any of them.

Oregon scored the game's final seven points to come from behind and beat Rhode Island 75-72 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Sacramento, California.DORSEY

Tyler Dorsey hit the winning 3-pointer with 40 seconds left, snapping a 72-72 tie.

Dorsey led all scorers with 27 ppints, going 9 of 10 from the field and 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Dillon Brooks had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Ducks, and Jordan Bell grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Rhode Island, a confident-looking 11th seed, took it to Oregon throughout the game but faltered in the late stages, when its shooting finally cooled off a bit, too. The Rams still finished at 50.8 percent from the field; Oregon closed well to get to 48.1 percent.

The Ducks, who came in as No. 3 seed but missed versatile big man Chris Boucher's presence, inside and outside, turned to timely shooting and heart to pull this one out.

Oregon (31-5) will play Michigan, a No. 7 seed, on Thursday in Kansas City, Missouri.

Rhode Island (25-10) hit 11 of 13 from the field to close out the first half with a 46-38 lead.

The Rams, 20-4 this season when leading at halftime, kept using their size to cause problems and rebound well against the Ducks.

But Oregon battled, too, and stayed close in what was a physical and at times testy battle.

With Brooks, Dorsey and Bell leading the way, the Ducks regained the lead at 68-66 inside the five-minute mark — their first lead since 2:50 remained in the first half.

Oregon went cold, but two offensive rebounds led to a 3 by Dorsey that tied the score at 72-72.

Oregon's Dylan Ennis missed a 2-pointer from the side, but Oregon got a steal by Bell off a tipped pass.

Then Dorsey nailed a long 3 for the lead.

Rhode Island missed a 3 but got the rebound and went for another

and missed badly, and by the time the Ducks secured the rebound off the air ball, the clock ran out.
