The Portland Speedway stock-car season picks up speed with a 200-lap race sponsored by the junior chamber of commerce. Three California drivers join such local favorites as Len Sutton in 1954 and 1955 Dodge, Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, Lincoln, Ford, Hudson and Chrysler cars.

• Gary Hval, a 17-year-old out of Rose City, is a medalist of the junior division of the Oregon Golf Association's 25th state championships with a 2-over-par 74 at Columbia-Edgewater Country Club.

• The Portland Beavers pull into Hollywood for a Pacific Coast League series with Bobby Bragan's Twinks.

• Maureen "Mo" Murphy, 16-year-old backstroke ace of Multnomah Athletic Club, flies to New York and then to Europe on a goodwill trip sponsored by the U.S. state department and the Amateur Athletic Union. She'll swim with other AAU national champions in meets at Helsinki, Athens, Istanbul and Rome.
