THURSDAY SPORTS NEWS/Pro golfer who coaches at North Idaho cruises to six-stroke victory in Redmond, capturing his first PNW PGA major title

Russell Grove of Idaho completed a wire-to-wire run at the Oregon Open Invitational on Thursday at Juniper Golf Course in Redmond.

The coach at North Idaho's first Pacific Northwest PGA major championship was worth $7,500.

Grove won by six strokes over runner-up Derek Berg of Sahalee Country Club.

Grove earned a spot in the 50th PGA Professional Championship next week at Sunriver's Crosswater.

Scott Erdman of Oswego Lake Country Club also was among those qualifying for that event.

After opening rounds of 67 and 65, Grove closed with a 1-under-par 71. His 54-hole total was 13-under 203.

Berg, who earned $4,750, shot 73 on Thursday.
