At Everett, Washington, the Hillsboro Hops opened pursuit of the Northwest League baseball championship on Thursday with a 10-3 victory over the AquaSox.
And, boy, did they open.
Home runs by the second and third batters of the game, center fielder Billy Endris and third baseman Eudy Ramos, gave the Hops a quick 2-0 lead.
A four-run fifth inning boosted Hillsboro's lead to 6-1, and neither the offense or defense let up.
Starter Jhoan Duran (1-0) went five innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on four hits and one walk. He struck out four.
Hops relievers Cal Becker and Erbert Gonzalez gave up a total of two hits and one run, with six strikeouts and one walk.
Hillsboro leadoff man Domingo Leyba, the shortstop, wound up with three RBIs.
Endris also had a double.
Ramos was 2 for 5 with two RBIs.
The Class A game drew a crowd of 2,399 at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Game 2 of the five-game series is 7 p.m. Friday.
