South Beaverton win spices tourney
A pitchers'-duel win by South Beaverton was among the highlights Thursday at Alpenrose Stadium as the annual Little League Softball World Series convened for its second day.
South Beaverton, the champion from Oregon District 4, held off Bacolod City Little League of Bacolod, Philippines, the Asia-Pacific entry, 1-0, and improved its tournament record to 1-1.
Amanda Peterson tossed a three-hitter for South Beaverton, with two walks and six strikeouts. She got all the support she needed in the second inning, when Allison Olivo hit a one-out single and scored when the next batter, Erica Eidson, doubled to left field.
In other pool play games, Lake Air Little League (Southwest) began the day with a 10-0 triumph over Softball Femenino de Coamo, Puerto Rico (Latin America); Rowan of Salisbury, North Carolina (Southeast) defeated Canada, 1-0; and Canal American of Newark, Delaware (East) topped Major Northwest e of Prasha, Czech Republic (Europe-Africa), 8-2.
Rowan and Lake Air are off to 2-0 starts, each leading their group.
Friday's four-game slate begins at 10 a.m., with Central facing Asia-Pacific. The 1 p.m. game is Europe-Africa versus West. At 4 p.m., Southeast takes on East. And South Beaverton will be on the field at 7 p.m. for a matchup against Latin America.
