U.S. Olympic Committee in quandary over Tonya Harding
Jan. 11-15, 1994
Tonya Harding's spot on the U.S. Olympic figure skating team is in question after an attack on fellow competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Harding's bodyguard, Shawn Eckardt, says her husband, Jeff Gillooly, asked him to arrange the assault, which took place about a week earlier at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Kerrigan suffered a severe bruise above her right knee, forcing her out of the U.S. championships.
The U.S. Olympic Committee reportedly hopes Harding will withdraw from the team before the Winter Games at Lellehammer, Norway.
