SCORESHEET/Thorns star Sinclair picks up a special honor in her native Canada

Before Sunday's hockey game at Moda Center, the Western Hockey League honored longtime Portland Winterhawks education adviser Sue Johnson with a WHL Distinguished Service Award.JOHNSON

Johnson has served as an academic adviser to Winterhawks players for more than two decades. She worked with players as a guidance counselor at Milwaukie High and was hired in 2010 as the club's education adviser.

WHL Commissioner Ron Robison recognized Johnson during a pregame ceremony. Introduced in 2004, the Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to honor one person in the Western Conference and Eastern Conference who has worked behind the scenes.

With Johnson overseeing academics, every Winterhawks high school-age player has graduated.

n Sunday's game was the 1,500th home game in Winterhawks history.

• Christine Sinclair was honored last week as an Officer of the Order of Canada. The Portland Thorns standout, who also starred at the University of Portland, has scored 169 goals for Canada's women's soccer team.

One of the highest Canadian honors, the Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.

Sinclair, 34, is one of 99 people selected in 2017 to join the Order of Canada. For the Thorns, she has 31 regular-season goals and three playoff goals over five seasons.
