SATURDAY WHL RECAP/Kieffer Bellows scores twice as Portland tops Tri-City, 3-2, at Moda Center

Kieffer Bellows scored two goals on Saturday, leading the Portland Winterhawks to a 3-2 win over the Tri-City Americans in Western Hockey League action witnessed by 9,879 fans at Moda Center.

Shane Farkas made 29 saves, including a couple of big stops in the third period, to earn his seventh win of the season in goal.

Ryan Hughes also scored for Portland, which had its entire lineup together for the first time since Dec. 10.

Cody Glass had the primary assist on both of Bellows' goals.

Portland is 31-18-1-3 for 66 points. The Winterhawks trail U.S. Division leader Everett by five points and are five points up on third-place Tri-City (27-17-7-0, 61 points).

Isaac Johnson had a goal and an assist for the Americans, who took an early 1-0 lead on a power-play goal from Dylan Coghlan.

Bellows tied the score 10:19 into the first period on a power play. He came from behind the net to redirect a perfect feed from Glass past goalie Patrick Dea. Dennis Cholowski had sent a cross-ice pass to Glass, who found Bellows open on the back door.

Hughes put Portland ahead less than five minutes later. Joachim Blichfeld, back from a two-game suspension, forced a Tri-City turnover, then dropped a pass to an open Hughes in the slot.

Bellows made the score 3-1 at 9:34 of the third period with his 26th goal of the season. Glass entered the zone, drew the attention of the defense, then slid the puck to an open Bellows, who didn't miss from the mid-slot.

Johnson's 16th goal of the season for Tri-City made it a 3-2 game with 4:03 remaining — and made for an interesting finish.

Portland killed off a penalty on Blichfeld for a faceoff violation, then withstood Tri-City's push with an extra attacker. Farkas made a big save to deny Morgan Geekie.

The Hawks were 1 for 4 on the power play, the Americans 1 for 5.

Next for the Winterhawks is a 7 p.m. Wednesday game at Moda Center against Victoria. On Friday, Tri-City is back at Moda Center.
