Woodcock opens with long jump win

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Barlow picks up 12 points in the long jump on Day 1, led by Danelle Woodcock with a win in the long jump.Barlow junior Danelle Woodcock opened the 6A girls state track meet with a win in the long jump Friday morning, moving into the lead on her second attempt with a leap of 17-feet-8-inches. Sheldon’s Elizabeth Prevedello regained the top mark on the next round of throws only to see Woodcock answer the challenge with a leap of 18-5 1/2 to end prelims at the top of the leader board. That mark would prove to be enough to win, but she stretched out to a best-effort of 19 feet on her final trip down the runway coming in almost a foot ahead of anyone else.

Barlow rookie Renick Meyer finished seventh in the event with a best mark of 17-1 1/4 on her first try. That was the best effort out of the first flight of jumpers by more than 18 inches.

Barlow’s Saraia Collmer finished 11th in the pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet.

Heavily favored Sunset left the door open in the team-title chase when it failed to cash in substantial points in the 3,000-meter final. The Apollos came into the meet with three of the top four qualifiers, but only two found the awards stand Friday led by a third-place finish. Sunset came up with nine points in the race.

Sheldon is the girls team leader through Day 1 with 25 points through four events, while Barlow sits fourth with 12 points.
