THURSDAY SPORTS NEWS/Oregon men's golf aims for return to NCAA championships; Wise's 66 trails Tour leader by 1


The defending NCAA champion Oregon Ducks, coming off a win at the Pac-12 championships, will travel to Louisiana for the NCAA regionals.

Oregon is seeded No. 2 in the Baton Rouge event, May 15-17. Host LSU is No. 1. Fourteen teams are in the field, including No. 3-seeded Virginia and No. 4 Duke.

Oregon is ranked ninth in the nation. LSU is sixth, Virginia 16th and Duke 22nd.

The low five teams at each of six regionals will advance to the NCAA championships, May 26-31 at Sugar Grove, Illinois.

Other regionals are at Stanford, California; Sammamish, Washington; Austin, Texas; West Lafayette, Indiana; and College Grove, Tennessee.


Rookie Aaron Wise from the University of Oregon was one shot out of the lead after Thursday's opening round of the Tour Corales Punctacana Resort and Club Championship in the Dominican Republic.

Wise was one of eight players who shot a 6-under par 66, a stroke higher than Jamie Arnold.

Wise had six birdies at Corales Country Club.

The 72-hole tournament, with $625,000 in prize money, continues through Sunday.
