Crime Stoppers of Oregon is offering a $1,000 reward for information about the death of a newborn, whose body was discovered Tuesday morning in a Portland recycling center.

Police detectives say that the baby was born in the past few days. Detectives want to hear from anyone with information about this case. The mother of the baby may need or have sought immediate medical attention, detectives said.

The baby's body was discovered by workers at EFI Recycling, 4325 N. Commerce St., at about 8:33 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

Officers arrived and, based on a preliminary investigation, called for the Medical Examiner, criminalists from the Forensic Evidence Division, and homicide detectives to respond to the scene to conduct a further investigation.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner performed an autopsy on the body of a full-term (or nearly full-term) African American or mixed-race baby girl with the umbilical cord still attached. The cause and manner of death are pending further investigation.

EFI Recycling is working with detectives to determine how the baby ended up at the recycling center.
