Former Timbers player Danny Mwanga to become U.S. citizen

by: TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO: MEG WILLIAMS - Danny Mwanga, former Portland Timbers who also played for Jefferson High and Oregon State University, will be sworn in Monday as a U.S. citizen.Former Jefferson High School student and Portland Timbers soccer player Danny Mwanga will be sworn in as a U.S. citizen on Monday morning.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service has announced that Mwanga, a citizen of Congo, will be among a small group sworn in at the USCIS Portland Field Office in Northwest Portland.

The Timbers recently traded Mwanga to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a first-round draft pick. He was drafted as the first overall pick of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft in the first round by the Philadelphia Union. His debut was in March of that year. Also in that year, he was a finalist for Rookie of the Year and was a nominee for the MLS All-Star game. He joined the Portland Timbers on June 6, 2012.

Before that, Mwanga came to the U.S. in 2006 to join his family and attended Jefferson High School, playing also for the Westside Metro Soccer Club. He went to Oregon State University, where he was named the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year. The next year, he was the player of the year in the conference, and was also selected as a second team All-American.
