The City Council will considering spending up to $4,300,000 to remodel warehouses into a training center for the Portland Police Bureau on Wednesday.

If approved by the council, bids for the project will be solicted within the next several months. Remodeling is estimated to begin in mid-2014.

The council has already approved project, which will be built on 9.6 acres of land at 14912 N.E. Airport Way. The city purchased the property for $6.4 million in April 2012. It includes 60,000 square feet of warehouse buildings, which will be remodeled for the training center.

The city has also entered into a contract for the installation of two shooting ranges and ventilation system at the center for $2,086,000. The contract is with Action Target of Provo, Utah.

And the city has paid $499,748 to Scott Edwards Architecture, LLP to design the project.

Altogether, the city has spent and anticipates spending $$13,285,748 on the project. It is being financed by the sale of $15 million in bonds on May 2012.

The Ppolice bureau does not currently have a single training facility. The bureau has recommended building one for many years to improving training.
