Portland Public Schools and the Portland Association of Teachers met with a state mediator for the first time this week — for eight hours — but did not reach an agreement.

The next mediation sessions are tentatively scheduled for Nov. 4 and Nov. 5, at a time and place to be announced.

After six months of bargaining, the two sides have reached agreement on just five of 28 articles in the contract under negotiation.

At issue for the district's 2,800 teachers are learning time for students, how teachers are hired and assigned, and pay and benefits for teachers.
