Mineral and Gem Show celebrates golden jubilee

Members of the Clackamette Mineral and Gem Club have spent hours sorting and polishing hundreds of rocks and gems, as they prepare to host the free 49th Annual Clackamette Mineral and Gem Show on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26 and 27, at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby.

The theme of the event is Clackamette Mineral and Gem Show’s 2013 Golden Jubilee.

“It is a small, traditional rock show, where we incorporate everything you would expect to find at a rock show, including lots of different rocks and minerals on display, rock and mineral dealers, a silent auction of lapidary materials and more, demonstrations and a children’s corner,” said Richard Mauer, the show’s chairman.

“You can find everything from diamonds to rocks worth 10 cents a pound,” he added, further noting that the group expects people to come in with rocks, asking for help to identify them.

This past summer, members washed and sorted through piles of multicolored rocks, setting aside the better ones to be auctioned off, while others go into buckets, to be sold in bulk.

Carolyn Hess, who calls herself a greeter at the group’s monthly meetings, summed it up with this: “I am the bargain rock chairman. We sell one-gallon and three-gallon buckets of rocks for reasonable prices. For some people, our show is their rockhounding experience.”
