Passengers in Hillsboro shooting released

Hillsboro police have released the three passengers in the car that was carrying a suspect who opened fire on two officers Friday night.

The suspect was shot and killed by one of the officers, who was not injured in the incident. The other officer suffered minor injuries.

The names of the suspect was not immediately released. Police were searching for the next of kin Saturday.

The names of the officers were not immediately released, either. They are on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated by the Washington County Major Crimes Team and Hillsboro Police detectives.

So are two other Hillsboro officers who arrived at the scene after the incident began.

The officers are scheduled to be interviewed Monday, after which police are expected to released more details.

The incident started as a traffic stop that was conducted at 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of Southeast Maple Street and 13th Avenue. The vehicle, a 1992 Honda Accord, was pulled over for a traffic infraction. The two police officers making the stop were in a marked squad car.

Police said a K-9 unit, which arrived on scene shortly after the initial traffic stop detected drugs in the vicinity.

A total of four people were inside the vehicle, police said. The front seat passenger pulled a semi-automatic handgun on one of the officers and started shooting. The officer was able to retreat without being struck by any of the bullets. The officer’s partner returned fire, striking the suspect. He died later at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in North Portland.

Police detained the other three people in the car. They were released after questioning. Their names were not immediately available.
