Wood Village robbery suspect was packing fake explosive device

Man faces five charges for armed robbery attempt

Gordon PetersonA man police arrested early Tuesday morning for an armed robbery attempt at a Wood Village deli was also packing an improvised explosive device, or an IED, said Lt. Steve Alexander, spokesman at the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

Explosive specialists called to analyze the device determined it was a hoax, Alexander said.

Gordon Peterson, 57, a transient, was lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center and is being accused of kidnapping, possession of an illegal weapon, unlawful use of a weapon and robbery.

Peterson also faces a charge for possession of a hoax destructive device.

The five counts total a bail amount of $527,500.

Just after midnight Tuesday, Nov. 19, officers responded to the report of a man with a gun robbing Dotty’s restaurant at 2705 N.E. 238th Ave., Alexander said.

Responders on the way to the scene learned a Dotty’s employee had disarmed the suspect and five customers had jumped in to help pin the man to the ground.

When police arrived, they took the suspect into custody without incident.

There were no injuries, and no shots were fired, Alexander said.

Detectives are still investigating the robbery.
