Oregon hospitals, clinics see increased activity

More than 100,000 extra Oregonians have health insurance this year because of the Affordable Care Act. And hospitals and clinics are stepping up to meet the extra demand.

Providence Health clinics are fielding about 30 percent more calls in the Oregon Region.

At Kaiser Permanente in Portland, the number of calls has doubled.

And all this comes despite problems at Oregon's troubled health insurance exchange.

Eric Earling of Lifewise Health said they've hired more staff.

"The Affordable Care Act was already a complex and potentially confusing issue. That was going to generate questions anyway and then you had all these late breaking announcements about extension of plans and changes in deadlines," he said. "And that generated even more questions from consumers."

People found eligible for coverage through Cover Oregon have until Sunday to pick a plan if they want it backdated to Jan. 1.

But people who missed that deadline have until the end of March to enroll.
