Donate your holiday tree for salmon habitat

by: MICHAEL ELLIS - Byron Thompson wrangles more trees into a coastal area where old Christmas trees are providing young fish with protection and food. You can get rid of your holiday tree by donating it to Christmas for Coho, a program run by the Tualatin Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited that recycles Christmas trees into habitat for native fish.

Trees can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 18 at two locations: Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters, 10910 NE Halsey St., Portland, and Royal Treatment Fly Fishing, 21570 Willamette Drive, West Linn.

A $10 fee covers the cost of transporting the trees out to the coast, where they will be placed in waterways to provide habitat and a food source for coho fry.

Because of water quality issues, Trout Unlimited can’t accept trees with flocking or tinsel.
