A suspect has been arrested on a Jan. 9 hit and run accident that sent a pedestrian to the hospital.
Gregory Latoza, 58, is charged with two counts of Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver. He is accused of fleeing the scene after hitting Max Martin, 22, on Southeast Powell.
According to police, Latoza turned himself in to police at Central Precinct on Tuesday, Jan.21.
The investigation began at 9:01 p.m. on Jan. 9 when Central Precinct officers responded to Southeast 31st Avenue and Powell Boulevard on the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
Officers and medical personnel arrived and located the victim, later identified as Martin, suffering from traumatic injuries. He was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment and has since been released to continue recovery at his home.
The Traffic Division's Major Crash Team responded to the scene and began an investigation that indicated Martin was crossing Powell Boulevard at 31st Avenue, in a crosswalk, from the south side to the north side of the street. As Martin crossed into the westbound lanes, a westbound car in the left lane stopped for him as he crossed but a different westbound car did not stop and struck him in the crosswalk.
The suspect vehicle was described as a white or silver vehicle, last seen driving away from the scene westbound on Powell Boulevard.
Investigators received information on Jan. 11 regarding the location of the suspect vehicle. Officers seized the suspect vehicle, a silver 2003 Ford Focus, and later served search warrants on the vehicle and Latoza's residence as part of the investigation.
