by: DICK HARRIS, PORTLAND FIRE & RESCUE - Cold weather did not prevent firefighters from extringuishing the blaze in this vacant house.Despite heavy snow and slippery road, firefighters quickly responded to a house fire in Southeast Portland and extinguished it early Friday.

The house was vacant and no one was injured.

Crews reached the house within Southeast 130th and Division within four minutes of the fire being reported. As Truck 7 from the Mill Park station approached, officers reported heavy fire visible from blocks away.

Using forcible entry tools, firefighters first breached the front door and then proceeded with a "defensive" attack used when the volume of fire within the structure makes it too risky to enter the building. Once the body of the fire was reduced, firefighters entered the structure to perform initial search and extinguishment of the remaining fire.

The fire was brought under control in 12 minutes. Incident commanders called a "Rehab" unit equipped with portable heaters and other supplies to help firefighters and fire companies return to service.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.
