Masked gunman robs OC jewelry store

UPDATE: OCPD releases sketch of suspect -

Masked and armed, a white man who may have had an accomplice robbed the Oregon City Coin & Jewelry store Monday afternoon.

by: OCPD - This sketch of the suspect is based on witness testimony after the OC jewelry-store robbery.Storeowner Darren Hansen said it was lucky at the time that his 1-year-old daughter was at a doctor appointment with his wife who is his sweetheart from Oregon City High School. Hansen lives nearby with his wife and three children who are all frequent fixtures in the store, 618 Molalla Ave., but he was alone just before 1 p.m. March 10.

Hansen said the man wearing a ball cap and glasses snuck underneath the store’s window so as not to be visible until the last second. Having served four years honorably in the Air Force after his 1999 graduation from OCHS, Hansen was fairly sure of his identification of the weapon as a genuine automatic.

by: FILE PHOTO - Darren Hansen and his daughter Caitlin are well-known to the Oregon City community and to customers of his coin and jewelry shop who come from all over the Portland area.“It looked very real to me, and he said, ‘Pull out your keys, open up the drawer and hand over the cash,’ so I reached over and pushed the panic button and told him that the police were on their way,” Hansen said.

When Hansen refused to go for the key, the suspect, who was about 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, broke down the gate that separates the cash-register area, just as Hansen jumped over a display case to get help on the street.

“I chased him up Molalla Avenue all the way up the hill to the Chevron a few blocks south,” Hansen said.

The man ran around the Chevron several times and got into a sedan similar to a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. Police say other witnesses saw a license plate similar to 407-HIC, and he picked up a woman as he fled the scene.
