A firefighter was rescued early Thursday morning after he was caught in a smoke-filled basement of a North Portland home. He was not injured.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to a house fire at 8025 N. Hudson Ave. around 1 a.m. on March 20. The fire was reported by neighbors who reported seeing dark smoke roiling from windows and roof eaves.

When crews arrived, they found smoke pouring out of the house. Firefighters were sent into the home to search for possible victims and to locate the fire.

An engine crew found the fire in the basement and began working to extinguish it before it spread to the rest of the home. As smoke and heat banked down in the basement, a common hazard of basement fires, one firefighter was unable to find the stairwell to get out.

A rescue team went into the house, found the firefighter and brought him to safety.

The fire was extinguished and investigators were looking for its cause. No damage estimate was available.
