At 5:47 a.m., Joseph Locke, 50, of Gervais, pulled his red SUV to the right shoulder of the highway, just south of the weigh station. He reportedly exited his vehicle and started to walk from the shoulder into the right lane.

An approaching sanitation truck, driven by Albert McCormick Jr., 63, of Stayton, moved to the center lane to avoid hitting the pedestrian, but he continued walking in that direction and was sideswiped by the truck. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

All lanes of traffic were blocked until 6:02 a.m., when the left lane and shoulder opened for one lane of traffic. All lanes were reopened by 10 a.m.

If anyone witnessed the crash or events leading up to the crash, they are asked to call Oregon State Police Northern Command Center dispatch at 1-800-452-7888.
