North Portland arson suspect arrested
Police have arrested a suspect in a string of arson fires in North Portland's Portsmouth neighborhood.
Richard David Simms Jr., 20, was arrested Monday morning and booked into the Multnomah County Jail for two counts of Arson in the First Degree, three counts of Arson in the Second Degree and one count of Reckless Burning.
Simms was identified after police officers reviewed surveillance video from a neighborhood resident.
Police suspect Simms of intentionally set six fires early Saturday morning between 3 and 4 a.m. The vandalism spree stretched from the area of North Hodge Avenue and Houghton Street to North Portsmouth Avenue and Lombard Street.
In addition to the fires, rocks were thrown at two car windshields.
No one was injured in the incidents.
Portland Fire and Rescue investigators estimated that the fires caused about $30,000 to the properties and vehicles.
