Motorcyclist in fatal crash named

Police are investigating the death of a motorcyclist in a head-on crash with another vehicle in Southeast Portland early Sunday.

Police say the motorcycle rider has been identified as David Henry Mitchell, 34. Investigators believe Mitchell was impaired by alcohol and was driving at a high rate of speed prior to crossing the center-line and crashing head-on into a Honda Accord station wagon.

The driver of the Honda, Brooks Brown, 53, was uninjured in the crash and has cooperated with the investigation.

According to police, at 2 a.m. on June 1, Central Precinct officers responded to Southeast 29th Avenue and Powell Boulevard on the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. When officers and medical personnel arrived, they learned that the crash did not involve a pedestrian but was actually a motorcycle rider that had been thrown from his motorcycle and was deceased in the street.

Preliminary information indicates that the motorcycle rider was traveling westbound on Powell Boulevard at a very high rate of speed, crossed over into the eastbound lanes of traffic and crashed head-on into a vehicle being driven eastbound.

The rider was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene. The Traffic Division's Major Crash Team responded to the scene to conduct the crash investigation.

Powell Boulevard was closed in for a few hours to allow for the investigation to be completed but should be reopened within a few hours.
