Deborah Kafoury will officially become the new Multnomah County chair today.

Kafoury, the former county commissioner who soundly defeated Jim Francesconi and other lesser-known challengers in the May 20 primary, will sign the formal paperwork at noon designating her as the new county chair.

The county chair is the chief administrator for county government and leads the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners.

Kafoury takes the reins from interim County Chair Marissa Madrigal, who served in a caretaker position after former County Chair Jeff Cogen resigned after a sex scandal. Kafoury won the right to fill out the remainder of Cogen's term, through the end of the year, and a full four-year term that begins in January.

Kafoury will attend a ceremonial swearing-in for new post on Monday, at 11 a.m. in Midland Library, 805 S.E. 122nd Ave. The public is invited.
