Find ideas for building your urban homestead

After last year’s successful launch, the Oregon City Farmers Market announced its second-annual Householding Fair will be Saturday, June 14.

Harriet Fassenfest, author of the “Householders Guide to the Universe,” will answer questions and offer advice on preserving, cooking and gardening, and she will discuss the notion of householding (reclaiming one’s home through land-based skills). Frugal-living blogger Sarah Tetreault will talk about how to simplify life, save money and have fun.

If you’re looking for ideas for creating an urban homestead on your city lot, check out booths with information on chickens, beekeeping, goats, preserving food, composting, growing food, worm bins, green cleaners, recycling, repurposing and disaster-preparedness.

“Be inspired to grow, conserve, preserve and make your own,” said market manager Jackie Hammond-Williams.

Kids will make freezer jam to take home, and there will be giveaways and a free drawing for prizes, including canning supplies and a compost bin. The 50-plus usual market vendors will entice you to eat healthy from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Live music, hot food, drinks and easy parking will be available at 2051 Kaen Road, off Beavercreek Road in Oregon City.
