New Seasons endorses GMO label campaign

by: TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO - New Seasons Market Chief Executive Officer Wendy Collie said her store was endorsing the GMO labeling campaign on the November ballot. No surprise here, but New Seasons Market is the latest local business to endorse the Oregon Right to Know Campaign, which will ask voters on the Nov. 4 ballot to require GMO labeling on all food products.

“At New Seasons Market we are passionate about providing our customers with transparent information so they can make good choices for themselves and their families. That is why we label nearly 4,000 products that are Non-GMO Project Verified in our stores, and why we are endorsing the Oregon Right to Know initiative that will require GMO labeling,” said Wendy Collie, New Seasons Market chief executive officer, in a Tuesday statement. “We believe this initiative will provide Oregonians with the information they need to make good choices and that the requirements laid out for our industry are reasonable.”

Other businesses and organizations endorsing the campaign include: Dave’s Killer Bread, Ben and Jerry's, Nancy’s Yogurt, Whole Foods, Capella Market, Center for Food Safety, Sierra Club, Consumers Union (which publishes Consumer Reports), Oregon Rural Action, Food & Water Watch, National Physicians for Social Responsibility and Fresh Start Farms, among others.

The initiative would require labeling on both packaged products (by manufacturers/packagers) and on bulk and fresh agricultural products (by retailers like New Seasons Market).
