Stuff the sousaphone on Saturday at Beaverton Community Business Expo

Beaverton Band Together initiative is collecting musical instrument donations for students

The Beaverton Education Foundation and the Beaverton Friends of Music are collecting musical instruments Saturday, and you can help.

The foundation has a booth at the Beaverton Community Business Expo at Beaverton City Park during the Beaverton Farmers Market from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. along Hall Boulevard between Third and Fifth streets.

As one of the 40 booths that will be set up during the event hosted by the Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce, volunteers will be collecting musical instruments and "stuffing the sousaphone," to reach the Starseed Challenge and make sure every Beaverton sixth-grader who wants to play in band this year can do so, said Kristine Baggett, executive director of the foundation.

Look for the Beaverton Band Together table to drop-off instruments for local students.

"We are about halfway to our initial financial goal — and receive the first installment from the Starseed Foundation to repair the donated instruments," Baggett said. "We have collected 20 of our 100 donated instruments to put in the hands of our youngest musicians."
