No wedding date with Cylvia Hayes announced.

Gov. John Kitzhaber's engagement to Cylvia Hayes, his longtime companion, has been confirmed by his office.

No wedding date was announced.

"They're excited about the news," says Melissa Navas, a spokeswoman for the governor's office.

It would be the third marriage for both. Kitzhaber has had a relationship with Hayes since she lost a bid for an Oregon House seat from central Oregon in 2002.

The engagement has been on a couple of weeks, Navas says.

Hayes is the state's official first lady.

Kitzhaber is 67; Hayes turns 47 this month.

She is a sustainability consultant and a senior fellow at the Clean Energy Development Center, based in Washington, D.C. Jules Bailey, a state representative from Portland who just took office as a Multnomah County commissioner, also is listed as a senior fellow.

He is serving a record third term as governor, and is seeking a fourth term on Nov. 4. He was an emergency-room physician from Roseburg when he was elected to the Oregon House in 1978 and the Oregon Senate in 1980. He was Senate president from 1985 to 1993, and was elected in 1994 to the first of two terms as governor.

His engagement to Sharon LaCroix was disclosed during the 1994 campaign, and they were married Jan. 1, 1995, before he took office for the first time. They announced their divorce a few days after he left office in January 2003.

LaCroix owned a chain of physical therapy clinics. A native of Canada, she obtained U.S. citizenship.

He also was married briefly in the 1970s.
